Standard Bernedoodle - Size, Color, and Generation Types

What is a Standard Bernedoodle

A standard bernedoodle is a mix between two breeds: bernese mountain dog and the poodle. Not only can it be the pairing of a bernese mountain dog and a poodle, but it can also be a mix of a poodle and a bernedoodle, bernese and a bernedoodle or even a bernedoodle and another  bernedoodle. We love genetics! No matter the pairing, they typically inherit traits from both parent breeds. We absolutely adore bernedoodles because of their intelligence, loyalty, and gentle temperament. They are incredible family pets as well as service dogs, therapy dogs, and emotional support animals. They most often have wavy coats, but can also have curly and straight.

Standard Bernedoodle Size

A standard bernedoodle can range in size depending on their parents, but generally standard bernedoodles are 45-115 pounds and 23-29 inches tall. The reason the size ranges so much is because poodles come in a range of sizes. An experienced breeder should be able to tell you within a 10-20 pound range how big your puppy is expected to be, but this isn’t always a guarantee of course. Remember, they have bernese in their lineage, so that plays a factor. We specifically don’t allow our families to pick their puppy until they’re 7 weeks old. This allows us to share which puppies in the litter are tracking on the larger side verses the smaller side. This also allows us to conduct temperament testing, that way you’re picking based on their temperament, personality, and size too! It would be easier for us to just have someone call and say “I want that one!” from a photo, but it really doesn’t do our families justice. When they choose based on the puppies personality, temperament, and size it always creates a much better match! Don’t take our word for it either, take a look at our Google reviews to see how our families feel about the process. Our goal is always to help you find a furbaby that really fits you and your lifestyle, to the best of our ability.

Mini Bernedoodle vs Standard

The only real difference between a mini bernedoodle and a standard bernedoodle is their size. A lot of people ask if we see a difference in temperament between the two, but we don’t. The difference in temperament is really puppy to puppy within a litter. That’s why temperament testing is so important.

When Do Bernedoodles Stop Growing

Bernedoodles, like many other breeds, typically reach their full height by around 12-18 months, but they may continue to fill out and gain muscle mass until they are around 2-3 years old. However, the exact timing can vary depending on a number of factors like diet, exercise, genetics, and overall health.

What is an F1 Bernedoodle

An f1 bernedoodle is a cross between a bernese mountain dog and a poodle.

F1b Bernedoodle

An F1b Bernedoodle is a cross between a Poodle and an F1 Bernedoodle. The result is an F1b Bernedoodle, which is ¾ Poodle. A lot of the time these puppies may have more of a curly coat.

Reverse F1b Bernedoodle

A Reverse F1b Bernedoodle is a cross between a Bernese Mountain Dog and a Bernedoodle. The result is a Reverse F1b Bernedoodle, which is ¾ Bernese Mountain Dog. Some of these are furnished and some are unfurnished. We genetic test these litters so we know for sure who is furnished and who is unfurnished from a young age.

Ultra Bernedoodle

An Ultra Bernedoodle is furnished and has more bernese than the poodle. The term “furnishings” refers to the long hair on the extremities of the dog including the head and tail. Most of the time they are fluffy and more of a straight coat.

Multigen Bernedoodle

A Multigen Bernedoodle means their parents are Bernedoodles, rather than being a first-generation cross (F1). When both parents are Bernedoodles, it’s referred to as multigenerational. We’ve had pairings like this so that we can help families find a certain coat type they're looking for or even a more specific size. We do genetic testing to know what types of coats we will have with these litters.

Bernedoodle Colors

When a Bernese Mountain Dog with a tricolor coat of black, white, and brown, is crossed with a Standard Poodle or bernedooodle, which can carry genes for various coat colors, the puppies can inherit a variety of coat colors and patterns. There’s nothing wrong with having or desiring a beautiful dog with a certain look, but regardless of coloring, their health, temperament, and well-being is always the top priority. We love genetics and looking at the colors each pairing can create.

Tri Color Bernedoodle

The classic tri or tri color is a mix of black, brown, and white. This look is considered classic, because it looks similar to the bernese. A lot of families that we talk with absolutely love the Bernese for their loyal and gentle demeanor, but they don’t love the shedding. A bernedoodle allows them to have the best of both worlds, plus the added benefits of the poodle!

Merle Bernedoodle

A blue merle color bernedoodle has a grey base and a chocolate merle bernedoodle has a brown base.

Phantom Bernedoodle

A phantom bernedoodle has a two-tone coat pattern, our most common are black phantom, chocolate phantom and merle phantom. Black phantom is black and brown with a hint of white possible. Chocolate phantom is two distinct shades of brown sometimes with a bit of white. Merle phantom is merle with brown and a possible splash of white.
